Office of the State Medical Examiner
Recognized as national leaders in their respective fields, the Kentucky Office of the State Medical Examiner staff assists Kentucky coroners in all aspects of death investigations by deterOffice of the State Medical Examiner 2008 Calendar Year Annual Reportmining the cause and manner of death and identification of the deceased. The 13 forensic specialists, including 11 pathologists who perform autopsies, annually conduct nearly 2,500 autopsies at offices located in Louisville, Frankfort, Madisonville and Ft. Thomas. Also, 250 examinations of living individuals, 90 percent of whom were children and may have sustained physical injury, were conducted to assist law enforcement or social services entities in investigations. The Toxicology Laboratory, a branch of the Office of the State Medical Examiner, conducts all post mortem tests.

In 2008, the Medical Examiner Division performed services for approximately 2,342 deaths. A detailed summary of the case distribution is delineated in this report. It should be noted that this annual report does not include all deaths occurring in Kentucky, but rather those cases investigated by the Kentucky Medical Examiner Program.
