KVE Commissioner Greg Howard announces retirement
Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement Commissioner Greg Howard today announced his retirement from the agency he has headed since it gained department status in 2004.
Howard made the announcement at the conclusion of the annual KVE awards ceremony in Frankfort, saying, “Every time we come together for the purpose of celebrating our accomplishments, I am reminded of what a privilege it is to be your commissioner.”
Howard was appointed commissioner when KVE was made a department under the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet to underscore its role as a law enforcement agency. During his tenure, KVE earned accreditation from the national Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, the culmination of a three-year process that included intensive policy development, on-site inspections, panel interviews, extensive file reviews and ride-a-longs with officers. The recognition made KVE the first police agency in the country dedicated primarily to enforcement of commercial vehicle laws and regulations to gain CALEA accreditation.
“You are now one of the most well respected law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. You have become the only agency of its kind to receive national accreditation, and you have worked hard to establish a level of integrity that no one can dispute,” Howard said. “For all of that, I am very proud of you, and grateful for the opportunity to have shared in what we have accomplished.”
Howard said that at the request of Justice Secretary J Michael Brown, he will remain in the position to assist in the search for a new commissioner and aid in the transition.
Howard has more than 30 years experience in law enforcement, including serving in several capacities at the Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond. He holds a master’s degree in loss prevention and security and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice/ police administration, both from Eastern Kentucky University. He also received specialized training from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.
